Because seriously. I cannot think of any other legitimate reason for disabling comments* than someone not being certain about one's position in certain matter, but at the same time not wanting to listen to other people who point out flaws in said position, because they think accepting this is a sign of weakness. Well, nope, I'm afraid.

Aaah, Wormwood, but there are trolls and haters on the Internet, and someone might... - Bah! Tell me not of the trolls and haters, kind sir. I've seen and experienced enough of them in my life to know how this works. These are not Internet inventions, they existed long before the advent of digital era. It just gave them a new tool for their activity. And in real life, there is no "Disable Comments" option. If you are unable to face them online, how are you supposed to face them in real life?
Plus, by separating yourself from trolls and haters you also separate yourself from valuable people who might serve you a good deal of advice. I recieved quite a few harsh words on some of my deviations, usually my early models and/or photos. Did I disable comments telling that I was a victim of trolling? No. I learned from them, and I must admit, they really made me think on some levels. I think that the main source behind my progresses were those several critical comments I've had.

Okay, but... There are also some very controversial topics, and people might not want to... - Spare me the details, good sir. Controversial means one which might evoke heated debate or even an argument, not a taboo topic one should not speak of. Since many of my deviations revolve around forgotten tales of Polish history, I sometimes touch quite sensitive matters: crimes of the communism, genocide of Poles by the Ukrainian nationalists, Allies abandoning Poles for the sake of their own interest, but also crimes of the Poles themselves. You don't see me disabling comments just because of that. Most of the people who deal with those topics are often quite intelligent, so there are two options here: either I explain my point of view to them and teach them something, or they show their point of view to me. Unless someone is a complete blockhead (and I'm happy to say it seems to be a dying species) this might result in an interesting discussion.

So next time you disable comments, don't tell me you don't want a troll attack. I'm not buying it. People who do this are most likely just narrow-minded and afraid of broadening their horizons. Not all of them, of course, but most of those whom I encountered - yup.

*okay, I just thought of two legitimate reasons for disabling comments while writing this: 1. when someone drops a WIP deviation and doesn't want people to comment on it yet (though this is still pretty weak; you are separating yourself from valuable feedback), and 2. sometimes people post other people's deviations on their pages with the other party's consent (for example in a group, or a commision... I didn't figure out enough examples yet) and they acknowledge the fact that this is not theirs work, so they say "Don't comment here, go to the original page" - then yes, this is a legit reason for disabling comments.

It's true and I'm tired of seeing stamps of all these little whiny crybaby virgins saying that "People Disable Comments For A Reason!" my response to that is I don't give a flying fuck! FUCK you and FUCK your reasons to disable comments is what I say to them. I don't have to care about them and I have the right to make fun of people who disabled comments. It's freedom of bloody speech! they think disabling comments and trolling people who criticize it makes them sound tough or something? how fucking childish. People who defend disabling comments on DeviantArt are no doubt just a bunch of little cowards and punk ass kids who need to get a life! I never knew that disabling comments was such a huge religion here that should never DARE be blasphemed or insulted.
